    Surrounding Areas
The cities of Groton and New London are directly across the Thames River from each other and are situated on the Long Island Sound. Although NSB New London is clearly named for the latter city, the base is located on the Groton side of the river. Groton's population is about 40,000, while New London's is about 30,000. This is a fairly well-populated area which offers residents plenty of off post housing in many different communities. Within a 20-25 minute commute of base are the towns and areas of Mystic, Stonington, Ledyard, Quaker Hill, East Lyme, Niantic, Uncasville, and Montville. Hartford, the state's capital city, is about a 1 hour drive northwest of Groton. Another major city, New Haven, is the same distance away but directly west along the coast.
